What's it all about, Alfie?

February 8th, 2009

A little bit about me:
One of my goals in starting an online community surrounding Independent Short Film is to provide an environment conducive to discussion and analysis.  The reason for this is simple:  I believe in excellence.

As contradictory as this will sound, I live by two maxims:  Excellence in all things, and Good enough is good enough.  In other words, I aim for excellence, but I won’t let my high standards prevent me from making any progress. Another maxim:  The greatest mistake you can make in life is to live in constant fear of making one.  Put differently, those who try but fail have gained a learning experience still lacking in those who fail by not trying at all.

Motivational rambling aside, it is my hope that by engaging in discussions about the Independent Short Films of others, we can learn more and strive for higher levels of excellence in ourselves.  So far, the discussion here has been rather one-sided, consisting of me scouring the internet for interesting and high-quality content to post, but very little interaction.  I must admit, I have gotten a few emails directing my attention to other content on the web, which I hope will continue and increase.  As my eyes and ears only extend so far, I depend on your input to keep my finger on the pulse of Independent Short Film.

However, for this community to be successfully established, I need your help, and that doesn’t only mean sending me new or popular Independent Short Films (or Independent Short Films of your own that you wish to promote).

I need to know what you want to find here.

In my web of ideas, I hope to post interesting content in various forms of media including links to relevant pages, text articles and vlogs, in addition to the Independent Short Films featured here.
I hope to not only post the Independent Short Films I find (or that you find for me) but to discuss, analyze and critique them.
I hope to have featured artists come and exhibit their work, answering questions about their experiences, their featured artwork, and other aspects of their craft.
I hope to encourage, inspire, and give guidance to those thinking about creating Independent Short Films.
I hope to work with you all on collaborative Independent Short Film projects, created by the community.
I hope to host Independent Short Film creation contests, Independent Short Film festivals and competitions.
I hope to build a reputation for quality into the community which enables us to connect with sponsors for future projects.

But that’s only me.  It’s YOUR community too.  Do you like these ideas?   Will you join me in making them reality?  Or do you have completely different, perhaps better ideas and suggestions?

Send me your suggestions and I will build this site into a world of opportunity, established in our collective vision.
